Bengaluru-based Anil Kadasur, popularly known as the ‘Century Cyclist’, ‘Cycle Yogi’ or ‘Cycle Guru’, died of a heart attack on February 2. On January 31, Kadsur reportedly shared his achievement of 42 months on social media. Back-to-back 100 km cycle rides. But later that night, the 45-year-old man complained of chest discomfort. He was later admitted to the hospital, where he died on 2 February. Kadsur was an inspiration to cycling enthusiasts not only in Bengaluru but beyond. His death came as a shock to his followers and people were also troubled by one question – how did such a fit person suffer a heart attack, that too at a very young age?
Dangers of Excessive Exercise
Dr Sudhir Kumar, consultant neurologist, Apollo Hospitals, Hyderabad, took to X (formerly Twitter) to share his insights. According to Kadsur’s previous posts and statements, he had been cycling daily for the last 42 months (i.e. more than 1200 consecutive days) and his mileage was more than 100 km per day. “He used to cycle for about seven hours a day to cover a distance of 100 km,” Dr Kumar shared on X. According to research, the effect of exercise on mortality is U-shaped: initially, the benefit, but exercise beyond a certain dose has harmful effects on health.” According to the doctor, this also means that the risk of mortality has increased.
The fact that he cycled daily and for many kilometers also meant that the body did not have time to recover. “Studies have shown that people who exercise daily without rest for at least one day a week have a higher risk of mortality,” Dr Kumar posted.
act with caution
Just as being sedentary can be harmful to health, exercising too much and not taking rest can also cause health problems. Dr. Kumar advises exercise enthusiasts to keep the following two things in mind:
1. Keep the dose of exercise within reasonable limits;
2. Take at least one day off from rigorous exercise per week.
Remember, by doing the right exercises, you will be able to get the maximum benefits without risking excessive wear and tear on your body.
